    Abstract:

5-(4'-methyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-yl)-1H-tetrazole was synthesized from 4'-methyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carbonitrile as the starting material in a total yield of 81%. 4'-Methyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carboximidamide(3) was firstly obtained by the addition of 4'-methyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carbonitrile with sodium amide in toluene. The consequent substitution reaction of 3 with hydrazine hydrate resulted in the formation of 4'-methyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carboximidhydrazide(4), and the final acidic cyclization of 4 with sodium nitrite gave the title compound 5-(4'-methyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-yl)-1H-tetrazole(1), whose structure was characterized by 1H NMR and MS.
